Urushi is the Japanese word for “lacquer”, which originally refers to a high-quality varnish made using urushiol extracted from lacquer trees. It is primarily used on woodcraft products.
Due to the recent decline in natural lacquer, alternatives such as cashew lacquer and water-based urethane lacquer are also being used in many products labeled as “lacquerware”. For this reason, natural lacquer is now called “hon urushi” (true lacquer), while other types are referred to as “craft lacquer,” a distinction recommended by lacquer-related associations. Currently, products simply marked as “lacquer” are almost all made using alternative lacquers.
